Pax Christi San Antonio Environmental Concerns
The stated purpose of Pax Christi is to advocate for the oppressed, to connect with and support other advocacy groups and to educate for social justice.
A recent Pax Christi San Antonio monthly meeting included Dianne Duesterhoeft, from COPS Metro, in which we addressed the problems in our community and what is being done to address them. We concluded with a position of seven points related to actions we can take to address the climate concerns.
It is our objective to review and update on community concerns, and to act as we are able, to address them.
We acknowledge that the concerns of some are the concerns of all, and with climate change, we do not have to go far to see the connection in minorities, in immigration issues and in economic reform. This point was emphasized in the recent Pace e Bene conference which boldly stated that we all need each other.
Because discussions and reflections can lead in so many directions, it is hoped that the positions taken by San Antonio Pax Christi, will continue to include input from others more intimately connected to specific issues such as racism, the role of police, the death penalty, and sexism, to name a few.
Because literature is our grounding in so many ways, a group review of Laudato Si, to include talking points from each participant, would lend substance to the messages in the letter.
With limits to meeting in person because of the virus, we do have zoom and can include anyone interested.

A study of our concerns for the environment has concluded the following positions:
Out of concern for our planet, we affirm the Encyclical, Laudato Si,of Pope Francis. We understand that this is an urgent matter and will act, as we are able, to address this concern. We are supportive of the implementation of solar energy in our community and affirm the use of churches and other public institutions which have implemented solar use. 2. We support the efforts of Catholic Charities and others involved in the community gardens at the Guadalupe Center, as well as the gardens of Eco Centro of the Alamo College District. 3. We support the creation of more Green Jobs, in the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The environment as well as employment concerns are connected in many ways. 4. We encourage auto manufacturers to produce more electric cars, and laud those who are doing so. 5. We promote clean air and water as a right for all. 6. We support HR 763 which addresses the Carbon tax. 7. We encourage and support the message of Pope Francis, who has said to do one extra thing for our environment. We honor those who have planted trees and recycled plastics.
